What happens during an Ear Cleaning Appointment?

An Ear Cleaning appointment with Dr. Jennifer Srour is SO much more than just an Ear Cleaning!

The first thing that will happen is a brief conversation between you and Dr. Srour on your ears and hearing history, as well as your overall health status. Then, Dr. Srour will examine your ears with a medical-grade and state-of-the-art Video Otoscope. This means Dr. Srour will show you on a big screen exactly what the inside of your ear looks like in real time, pretty cool right? A few notable landmarks of your ear that Dr. Srour will point out may include your ear canal, ear drum, and even the tiniest bones in your body which live in your middle ear space and can often be seen with high-quality lighting.

Most patients who schedule an appointment with Dr. Srour for an Ear Cleaning do in fact have excessive ear wax that require a professional to remove, so the first thing Dr. Srour will do is take pictures of your ear pre- and post-the ear cleaning. Then, depending on how much wax is present, if it appears wet or dry, and its color, etc., Dr. Srour will discuss with you the gentlest and safest method she recommends to remove it. Dr. Srour takes advantage of high-quality methods of ear wax removal combined with a patient-centered approach. This means Dr. Srour wants you to feel safe and comfortable throughout the appointment, and she has your overall holistic health in mind! For this reason, an ear cleaning may take more time than your average primary care, urgent care, or even ENT office as Dr. Srour operates on your time and pace. Methods of ear wax removal may include manual removal with curettes, irrigation with water, and suction removal.

After the Ear Cleaning, Dr. Srour will test your ears for fluid or excessive congestion that could be happening behind your ear drum. This short test will also examine the health and mobility of your ear drum as well as a tiny muscle in your ear. This is an important part of the Ear Cleaning appointment because although patients may be coming to Dr. Srour for an Ear Cleaning, they may also be having ear congestion issues on top of excessive ear wax that they are unaware of.

The final part of the Ear Cleaning appointment includes a state-of the-art hearing screening. Hearing wellness is a huge part of your overall health at ANY age. Unfortunately, most people do not obtain a hearing screening till they notice a problem and by then, it may be too late.

Remember; we hear with our brain, not with our ears, so getting a routine hearing screening keeps us sharp, heathy, and helps us live our best selves!
