How to Choose the Right Audiologist for You and Your Family
Audiology is the study of hearing, balance, and other ear-related disorders. An audiologist is a professional who specializes in diagnosing and treating hearing loss and balance disorders. Audiologists, like Dr. Srour, use a variety of tests and procedures to assess hearing and balance function and to fit and dispense hearing aids and other assistive listening devices.
What Does An Audiologist Do: Hearing Wellness Services
-
Adult Comprehensive Hearing Testing
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association recommends that adults below age 50 have a hearing screening by an Audiologist once per decade and every 3 years after age 50. More frequent screenings may be necessary if you have been exposed to high levels of noise or have any health conditions associated with hearing loss.
Hearing tests for children: Dr. Srour offers fluid and congestion checks for children over 1-year-old and hearing screenings for children in first grade or older. If your child has a speech delay, Dr. Srour will refer you to a specialist.
-
Case History & Hearing Questionnaire
A comprehensive hearing testing provides insight to the cause of your hearing loss and guidance to Dr. Srour in making appropriate recommendations and referrals when necessary. Dr. Srour will begin by asking questions about your hearing and review your past and current medical history with you. If you have concerns for your hearing, you may also be asked to complete a hearing questionnaire. For example, if you are over the age of 65, the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly-Screening (HHIE-S). The HHIE-S is the most commonly used hearing screening questionnaire. It assesses any social and emotional factors associated with hearing loss and takes about 2 minutes to complete. If you are at risk of falling or have fallen within the past six months, you may also be asked to complete a Falls Risk Questionnaire.
-
Video Otoscopy
The Video Otoscopy is a state-of-the-art experience where both you and Dr. Srour can see what is inside your ears! Dr. Srour will use a medical-grade video otoscopy to visually examine the health of the outer ear and ear canal, while also checking for excessive cerumen (ear wax). Dr. Srour will also review all of the unique and intricate landmarks of your ear.
-
Tympanometry
A brief pressure test in the ears will determine how mobile your tympanic membrane (ear drum) is and the overall function of the middle ear. This pressure test also helps determine the type of hearing loss you may be experiencing.
-
Pure Tone Testing
The next part of the test assesses hearing sensitivity and the softest levels of sound that you can hear by presenting a series of beeps that you will be asked to respond to whenever you hear them. This is done by various state-of-the-art headphones.
-
Word Recognition Testing
A list of words will be presented to you, one with noise in the background of each word and one without. This tells Dr. Srour your hearing nerve functions with regards to understanding the words being presented and particularly how the entire auditory system functions when faced with background competing noise. The experience is real-world like and crucial to determining your unique levels of success with hearing aids.

Dr. Srour has been helping people with hearing problems and hearing aids for over 10 years. She specializes in Cochlear Implants, holds a professional certification in ear cleaning, and offers a holistic approach to ear health through auriculotherapy.
How do audiologists test for hearing problems?
Dr. Srour and other audiologists use an audiometry test, checking how well you hear using different sounds, typically through headphones. Your hearing sensitivity is then tracked on a graph that your audiologist deciphers and can then make recommendations for your ear health. Other common tests can include a physical exam, general screening, tuning forks and even app-based tests.
Do I need a referral for a hearing test?
For some insurances, a referral may be needed. Our team is happy to help verify insurance benefits and your coverage at no charge. A copy of your insurance card, front and back, will be needed as well as the patient's date of birth or photo ID. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Srour!
What Causes Tinnitus?
There are many possible causes of tinnitus or ringing of the ears. Genetics, ear infections, excessive ear wax, medications and exposure to loud noises are all possible causes of tinnitus. It can be a symptom of an underlying condition, so it’s important to see an audiologist if you’re worried about it.
How do audiologists treat hearing problems?
Hearing loss can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, aging, exposure to loud noise, and certain medical conditions. Sometimes a simple ear cleaning may help with hearing issues. Often hearing aids or a cochlear implant may be necessary. Every person's hearing loss is different so visiting a licensed audiologist to learn more about your treatment options is recommended.
What are the different types of cochlear implants?
There are four main types of implants that include cochlear implants, bone-anchored hearing aids, middle ear implants, and auditory brainstem implants. Implants will depend on the type of hearing loss and are beneficial for those who have trouble with the amplification from a hearing aid, or for those who are unable to wear a hearing aid.
What are the different types of hearing loss?
There are many different types of hearing loss, and each type can be helped by a different type of hearing implant. The most common type of hearing loss is sensorineural hearing loss, which is caused by damage to the inner ear or to the nerve that connects the inner ear to the brain. Sensorineural hearing loss can be age-related or caused by many things, including exposure to loud noise, certain medications, head injuries, and diseases such as meningitis.
