Enjoying Thanksgiving without Dizziness!

Thanksgiving...what could be better than enjoying this special time of the year surrounded by good friends, family, and delicious holiday foods? Growing up in New York City, my siblings and I would watch the Thanksgiving Day parade live while Mom prepared Thanksgiving Day feast with juicy pineapple flavored Turkey, roasted chestnuts, mashed potatoes, and a variety of sweet pies for dessert. Food for me is the highlight of this holiday for sure!

However, a little food for thought; overeating and consuming certain foods in excess can increase your chances of getting Dizzy! Our tradition of enjoying a glorious feast on Thanksgiving makes this holiday particularly risky for experiencing dizziness after overeating.

When finishing a meal, blood flow must be directed to the stomach and other digestive intestines. The heart has a big balancing act in this process as it will reduce blood flow in other areas so that it can be redirected to the intestines. For some individuals, this mechanical process does not always work properly, and they can experience a sudden drop in blood pressure, resulting in dizziness, light-headedness, and an increased risk of losing consciousness all from consuming a large meal.

On Thanksgiving Day, try the best that you can to stick with a regular and timely eating schedule, the same you would any other day. Be cautious, and limit consumption of raw meats and fatty, salty, or fried foods. Hydrate, drink plenty of water throughout the day! Plan a nice after-meal stroll which does wonders on digestion especially prior to bedtime. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy the Day with great health! Happy Thanksgiving!
