What Does An Audiologist Do?

Audiologists are health care professionals who diagnose, assess, and treat hearing, balance, and other neural system disorders. They must be licensed and hold a doctor of audiology degree before practicing. An audiologist will educate patients regarding hearing loss, hearing protection and issues relating to the ear. An audiologist can help with a number of hearing disorders and balance issues. Services don’t stop there though, an audiologist helps educate patients regarding their personal ear health and any hearing aid or implant they may need.

Audiology Services Offered By Dr. Srour

Dr. Srour is passionate about audiology and how the ear can affect the whole body. Read more about Dr. Srour and her connection to providing hearing services. Some services offered through Your Home Audiologist and EarSpa:

Comprehensive Hearing Test

Dr. Srour will provide a full hearing screening, recommended every 10 years for those under 50 or ever 3 years after. Of course, if a patient has high levels of noise exposure or health conditions related to hearing loss, more frequent screenings may be recommended. This hearing test will provide a full evaluation of the sensitivity of your ears using a number of different testing techniques. Your hearing history will also be important and discussed during your appointment as well as in a hearing questionnaire provided by Dr. Srour.

Balance Assessment

A balance assessment, or balance test, is used to evaluate the balance of the inner ear and some parts of the brain. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a common balance disorder and can cause spinning, lightheadedness, imbalance and sometimes nausea. Head position can commonly cause or effect the symptoms. Dr. Srour practices the Epley Maneuver to help dislodge debris and help provide relief from BPPV.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a common symptom many people experience in their ears, and everyone experiences it different. This means that treatment must be personalized and a full assessment on the ears and symptoms must be completed. There are different types of tinnitus, and while there is no cure there can be different ways to relieve symptoms. Dr. Srour practices many different types of tinnitus therapy options for patients.

Hearing Aids

Hearing loss doesn’t just affect older adults, it can affect people of all age ranges. Dr. Srour uses state-of-the-art equipment and an in-depth appointment focuses on your hearing loss, lifestyle and hearing needs you have. While hearing aids can be expensive, Dr. Srour offers patients a wide range of packages to fit everyone’s needs and can help provide hearing aids on a budget when they are not covered by insurances.

Hearing Implants

Dr. Srour has a strong passion for hearing implants, specializing in Cochlear Implants. Bone conduction implants are designed to help people with hearing loss when hearing aids are not able to help. Air conduction transmits the sound and stimulates the inner ear directly. Cochlear implants are another type of implant that may be used if you are a candidate. This type of implant system works on an external sound processor and internal receiver. An extensive candidacy evaluation is required to determine the type of implant needed.

Ear Cleaning

Wax can build up within the ear canal and cause pain, hearing loss and trouble hearing people talking. Dr. Srour uses three different methods of wax removal, providing a safe and easy way to dislodge any wax that may have built up. Ear cleaning should never be done with a cotton swab as it can further push back wax into your ear canal or even damage or rupture your ear drum.

Auriculotherapy

Dr. Srour approaches ear health from a holistic approach and through EarSpa offers auriculotherapy. This can come in the form of ear accupressure using ear seeds, auriculomassage and an auriculodiagnosis. Auriculotherapy focuses on the nerve endings found in the ear and can help stimulate changes in your body by stimulating different pressure points. This can help chronic pain, migraines, anxiety, insomia, addiction detoxification, allergies and more.

What Is the Difference Between an ENT Doctor and an Audiologist?

An audiologist specializes in identifying, diagnosis and treating auditory issues in the ear relating to different issues including tinnitus, balance and hearing loss. An audiologist has a strong expertise in the technology used to treat these different conditions. Hearing loss and hearing aids are one of the most common areas an audiologist works in, helping patients find relief, adjust to their condition and even assist in practical matters to help their hearing including different resources or technologies for home use.

An ENT doctor, or ear, nose and throat doctor, deals with medical issues. This relates more to disease, trauma, tumors or other abnormalities impacting the ear. These doctors can also help treat nerve issues and sometimes help with allergies that impact the ears, nose or throat. ENT doctors do not have the same expertise an audiologist has in relation to hearing loss.

Is an Audiologist A Real Doctor?

An audiologist is not a physician but they do possess a Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degree and must be certified to practice. An audiologist is a doctor from the doctorate they have earned, but a full medical training is not required.
